Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy declared during his trip to the US capital that Vladimir Putin's decision to request negotiations with the US president indicates Moscow is feeling pressure. Zelenskyy commented, "It's evident that Russia is scrambling to resume dialogue as soon as it hears about cruise missiles." These remarks addressed earlier musings about supplying long-range weapons to Ukraine.

Political Developments and Global Responses

A former US state department official, a foreign policy expert, commented, "The Russian leader is trying to derail the progress toward greater pressure on Russia." Fried continued, "The outcome will become clear tomorrow, but the chances of achieving a truce by pushing Russia to engage sincerely seem to have decreased."

This development came after the US president had in recent days been hardening his language toward Russia until the recent call with Putin, which the Russian government characterized as "highly frank and constructive."

EU Energy Sanctions and Economic Impact

The European Union have set a requirement for energy importers into the EU to demonstrate their products are not made from Russian crude, as stated in a official guideline published on Thursday. This step is part of the EU's forthcoming ban on purchases of refined products made from Russian petroleum, which is included in its latest sanctions package against Russia over its military actions in the region.

Market analysts observed that investment patterns appeared to be considering the possible reduction of India's purchases of Russian oil. Several oil processors in India are preparing to cut Russian oil imports, with projections of a gradual decrease, as reported by insiders familiar with the situation.

"This is a favorable turn for the crude oil price as it would eliminate a big customer of Russian oil," said Tony Sycamore, adding that oil prices were steady on the trading day.

Military Developments and Infrastructure Strikes

A large-scale Moscow's drone and rocket assault targeted gas facilities in Ukraine's eastern regions on Thursday, resulting in outages in eight areas. Ukrainian officials reported that Russian forces deployed hundreds of drones and many of projectiles, along with glide bombs.

"This autumn, the Russian forces use daily opportunities to strike at our energy infrastructure," declared Volodymyr Zelenskyy, adding that attacks affected the areas of northern Ukraine, eastern Ukraine, central Ukraine, Sumy and Vinnytsia.

International Diplomatic Reactions

Ukraine's envoy to the United States, the Ukrainian ambassador, asserted that Russia demonstrated its real approach to peace through the "violence" of such strikes. She revealed a "roadmap" to get ready for possible security challenges by 2030, including a novel defensive network to be fully operational by the 2027 deadline.

The proposed system, called the "EU defensive program," is projected to begin working in its first phase by the end of 2026 and be fully functioning by the following year. Brussels hopes to secure the support of member state representatives at a summit in the coming days.
