Our team is analyzing images and video shared this morning that depict the scene of a reported vehicle-borne explosive blast that Russian officials say killed a high-ranking military officer in Moscow.
Officials in Russia stated that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was in the vehicle that exploded and that he succumbed to his wounds. An investigation is currently ongoing.
Our starting point to verify the site of where the pictures originated was based on social media reports indicating the explosion occurred on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern district of the Russian capital.
We used street-view imagery on Google Maps and the local mapping service Yandex Maps to corroborate the distinctive yellow colour of a nearby apartment building seen in the footage.
Locating other structures, lamp-posts and the road configuration verified the exact location the pictures were taken.
Additionally, we verified that the videos were recent and that the images had not been manipulated.
