The former Brazilian leader has been arrested after authorities concluded he posed a concrete flight risk while under domestic detention.

The one-time leader was sentenced of planning a government overthrow in September and handed more than over two decades in jail, but he remained under house arrest pending appeals.

Top Judicial Official Justice Moraes said the decision to arrest the elderly politician was a precautionary step after fresh information came to light.

This encompassed seeking to disable his electronic bracelet and a invitation to a demonstration that could enable a potential flight.

Context of Sentencing

Bolsonaro was convicted of heading a scheme aimed at keeping him in power after he failed to win the national vote to his left-wing rival, President Lula.

Supreme Court justices said that he had knowledge of a scheme which included plans to assassinate the current president and his running partner, Geraldo Alckmin, and to arrest and execute Justice Moraes - the top judicial official who has been presiding over his judicial proceedings.
