Inuit Females Claim Judicial Victory over Fight against Denmark regarding Coerced Contraceptive Coil Injustice.

Survivors of a historical campaign in which numerous of Inuit females, some minors reportedly were covertly implanted with contraceptive coils absent informed permission are declaring victory following their legal fight against the Danish government.

It has been announced the women are now eligible for compensation from a settlement package.

Government Agreement Finalized

Folketinget, and the government, finalized a deal that entitles approximately four thousand five hundred affected individuals to claim 300,000 DKK (£35,000) each.

The decision follows a three-year campaign led by a group of women who filed a lawsuit demanding compensation for the trauma and distress they had endured, arguing it was a violation of their human rights.

Colonial Context

Denmark ruled Greenland as a colony until 1953 and retained control of its healthcare system until 1992.

Earlier this year, after years of failing to acknowledge the violations, Denmark made an official apology. The country's leader expressed sorrow over the “institutional prejudice” targeting women and girls within the Danish healthcare system.

“These actions caused major consequences for the affected women who have experienced not only physical but also mental trauma,” said a government minister.

Compensation Process Details

The health ministry stated that women who were given contraception covertly during a thirty-one year period can seek compensation starting next year. The law will come into force in June.

Based on results of an impartial inquiry of contraceptive practices from that era, an estimated 4,500 individuals are potentially eligible for the fund.

For eligibility, applicants must:

• Submit a “plausible account” of the incident.
• Have lived on the island throughout the qualifying period.
• Declare on oath that they possessed no awareness or consent for the procedure.

Perspectives of Victims

One of the women, who was 14 when she was instructed to report to the hospital without explanation, said it as feeling a violation.

“Our activism as speakers and interviewees proved successful,” she stated. “It began in 2022 resulting in within three years we have secured an official apology and financial acknowledgment.”

A different perspective shared happiness, saying, “This is a positive outcome. As my mother put it: it's a victory.” Although some believe the amount should have been higher, they expressed relief regarding the recognition of what happened.

Ministerial Responses

A Greenlandic minister described the compensation being “well past due”. Stating clearly, “It is not about the money. It is about recognition of the injury and the profound implications.”

The relevant cabinet member conceded the scandal was a “dark chapter in our shared history”, adding that compensation “will not erase the suffering for survivors” but it “helps to acknowledge and express regret over the experiences.”
