Extreme heat and intense wildfires have devastated the dry landscape of Western Australia. As mercury levels forecast to continue climbing above 40C (104F) over the coming days, a severe alert for extreme heat has been declared across a large portion of the southwestern region.

This situation follow recent bushfires in New South Wales, which caused the loss of properties and loss of life. Severe heatwave warnings have also been issued for later this week in parts of SA and NSW, as a ridge of atmospheric pressure shifts to the east, bringing blazing heat to a broad swath of the area.

The combination of extremely dry land and unbroken heat creates a volatile situation for emergency crews.

Worldwide Climatic Events Trigger Disruption

Elsewhere, a metropolis was left in blackout recently after strong gusts damaged the city’s power grid, with falling trees bringing down electricity cables. The weather conditions also caused significant transport delays at a key airport, where hundreds of flights were cancelled. Substantial impact on electrical infrastructure is anticipated to cause further issues as service providers work urgently to reconnect electricity to more than 1 million residents.

Unusual Mist Covers Sunny Area

At the same time, a region known for its clear skies and plentiful sunlight has experienced one of its grayest and foggiest weeks on record. A specific type of fog, which typically lasts for only a few days, has been unusually extensive and persistent this year, holding temperatures at a key transport hub below 8C for more than a week – the longest such streak in over three decades. The prolonged haze has been fuelled by unprecedented autumn precipitation that left soils saturated.

Severe Weather Brings Snow to Tourist Islands
