The former US president’s latest warning to enforce an additional complete levy on items imported from China has been called a “prime illustration” of American hypocrisy, as stated by the Chinese government.

A representative of the ministry additionally remarked that the nation could introduce its own unspecified “retaliatory steps” if the White House occupant executes his pledge, adding that the country was “not afraid” of a looming commercial battle.

This past Friday, the former president hit back at the Chinese government’s action to strengthen its policies for exports of rare earth minerals, alleging China of “turning aggressive” and attempting to hold the world “hostage”.

He also warned to withdraw from a arranged talks with Chinese leader Xi, which was arranged for a summit in the Republic of Korea later this month.

Trump’s comments on that day rattled global markets, with the benchmark US stock index closing down 2.7%, marking its steepest fall since last spring.

His comments reignited apprehensions of a trade conflict between the two economic giants.

Earlier this year, the respective governments had consented to drop significant levies on each other’s goods, which had led to concerns of commerce ceasing between the two nations.

Officials denounced US export restrictions on semiconductors and chips while defending Beijing’s overseas sale regulations on rare earths as “routine measures” to protect domestic safety and that of all nations.

The official stated that for “a long time”, the US had “expanded the interpretation” of national security, exploited overseas sale restrictions and “adopted unfair treatments against China.

“Turning to” trade levy ultimatums is not the correct approach to deal with China,” the spokesperson stated.

“The nation’s view” on a trade conflict has consistently been unchanging: we are not seeking one, but we are fearless of one.”

Last week, the Chinese government revealed it was strengthening foreign shipment restrictions on rare earths and further resources vital for high-technology production.

This was seen as a significant step, as the nation handles about the vast majority of the planet’s critical minerals, which are utilized in products such as photovoltaic modules and smartphones.

New remarks from both governments are being viewed by analysts as a method of strengthening positions ahead of future trade talks.
